Making a Push to Get to Where It Already Should Be: The Siemens Japan Story

Siemens Japan's competitors in industrial controls include Fanuc, Yokogawa, Yamatake, Yaskawa and Mitsubishi Electric. In industry automation, it’s Mitsubishi, Omron, and Yokogawa. In the power business, the main competitors are Mitsubishi, Hitachi and Toshiba. In healthcare, Siemens competes with General Electric (GE), Philips and Toshiba in imaging; Roche Diagnostics, Abbott Labs, and Kobe-based Sysmex Corporation in diagnostics; and Rion, Denmark’s Oticon, and Resound, another Danish concern, in hearing aids.

"We have not made as much progress here as we have in the US or China," admits Siemens' Japan's president Peter Zapf.  So the German conglomerate is trying to catch up to where it should be in Japan by focusing on its best businesses, and by partnering with others who are innovating in new areas such as hospital information systems.
